A “breast lift” is actually a continuum of procedures designed either to lift the nipple, the breast mound, or usually, both. The procedure may be as simple as a crescent lift to elevate the nipple, or may extend down the front of the breast and to either side to reduce excess skin causing droop (ptosis) and elevate and concentrate the breast tissue. Breast skin excess (ptosis) most commonly occurs after enlargement during pregnancy and subsequent decrease in breast volume and skin stretch following pregnancy. Breast lift may be combined with implant placement to augment the breast and give more fullness to the upper breast (superior pole).
A breast lift is designed to remove excess skin to the breast causing drooping. A breast lift always involves skin removal, and so there is some degree of scarring, even if only around the areola. The advantage is a more firm and shapely breast, and more ideal positioning of the nipple. The extent of skin removal will depend on the degree of skin excess present preoperatively.
