Injectable Fillers

There are a variety of injectable fillers which are used to achieve a variety of results in several areas of the body. The areas most often "filled" are forehead wrinkles, smile lines and other deep depressions. Fillers may also be used to "plump-up" cheeks and enhance lips.

The most common used filters are collagen, a gel-like substance derived from purified animal tissue, and fat, which is harvested from another part of the patient's body, such as the abdomen or thigh area. Other substances used as fillers include a gelatin powder compound mixed with the patient's blood before injection, and a thread-like synthetic material implanted below the skin to lift deep wrinkles.

The effects of filler injections are temporary because the substances gradually and safely are absorbed by the patient's body. Filler injections must, on average, be repeated once or twice a year in order to maintain the desired effect.

Botoxtm (Botulinum Toxin) injections are also used in the treatment of certain facial wrinkles. Botoxtm is not a "filler." It works by temporarily weakening facial muscles. This relaxes the skin's surface, thereby "removing" the wrinkle. Botoxtm injections take effect in three to five days, and last between three to six months.
