“Plastic Surgery is Real”
The psychological impact of improving one's appearance by making structural changes or the use of cosmetic procedures to reduce the signs of aging can have profound effects on the way people think about themselves. As a result of such procedures, people often function better because they feel better. It is important that you know and understand the treatment you will undergo, and even more so that you are realistic about what it can and cannot accomplish.
Today’s plastic surgeon and plastic surgery patients are getting feedback from television’s reality shows, which represent results in a “Hollywood” context and may lead patients to come to unrealistic conclusions, have unrealistic expectations and minimize the risk that is attached to any surgical procedure.
The problem is such that The American Society of Plastic Surgeons issued this statement, which we ask that you heed, “Plastic Surgery is Real. With the surge of makeover reality television programs, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) cautions the viewing public to have realistic expectations about cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgery is real surgery with great benefits and, as with all surgical procedures carries risks. ASPS encourages people considering cosmetic surgery to educate themselves and select an ASPS Member Surgeon.”
In short, the best advice is that you be open-minded, responsible, willing and realistic about the results of your surgery and we will be available to answer any questions or address any concerns.
