A number of options are available for reconstruction of the breast following mastectomy. Most commonly the breast is reconstructed with implants, with or without tissue expansion depending on the amount of skin retained after the mastectomy. Other options include autogenous flaps with or without implant. The nipple reconstruction is done once the breast reconstruction is completed, to ensure accurate placement.
Fat transfer is performed to augment deficient areas of the reconstructed breast to give it a more natural appearance. The upper aspects (superior poles) are most commonly treated with fat transfer. The donor site is typically the abdominal area.
