BodyFX is a safe, new, state-of-the-art non-surgical alternative to liposuction. It is superior to Coolsculpt because is more targeted to areas of unwanted fat or cellulite (Coolsculpt is non-targeted), causes skin tightening which Coolsculpt does not, treats cellulite, and has much fewer side effects including paradoxical fat deposition associated with Coolsculpt.
BodyFX uses radiofrequency and heat to kill fat cells and tighten skin. Coolsculpting cools the fat to just above freezing, causing crystallization and cell death. There is no skin tightening with Coolsculpt. Both methods result is slow loss of fat by resorption. BodyFX is performed by a physician or physician assistant. With Coolsculpt the patient is left unattended. BodyFX can also reduce the appearance of cellulite because of skin tightening. Coolsculpt does not help with cellulite. Best results are seen 2-4 months after treatment with both procedures. BodyFX requires 4 to 8 treatments at weekly intervals, whereas Coolsculpt requires one to two treatments. BodyFX treatments are 15 to 30 minutes, whereas Coolsculpt is one hour per area.
Side effects with BodyFX are minimal. The patient may experience redness and warmth for several hours after the procedure. Side effects from Coolsculpt are more significant. Patients will experience mild bruising; It is common for the treated area to feel bloated and look swollen for up to 1 month. Patient may experience temporary blanching of the skin or redness. The treated area often feels sore when touched for 2-7 days and may feel a temporary dulling or numbness in the treated area for 2-6 weeks.
Potential complications with freezing include skin damage, ulceration or scarring; prolonged or severe pain; abrupt fat layer changes, including “step-off” changes, a visible step like depression due to treatment induced unevenness of fat under the skin; and paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, the development of new fat deposits after treatment.
